My oldest UFO
Thanks to Karlie, Jackie, Nona, Vicki, Violet for your kind comments on the Great sweater. I knit it on a circular as far as the armpits to fool myself into feeling like I was making quicker progress, and it worked. As nona pointed out, it was extremely quick to knit up (in fact I forget the actual date I finished. I was in too much of a hurry to wear it, and failed to photograph it and blog it at the time).
And with that seamless segue, let me introduce you to Hilde, my oldest work in progress:
Hilde jacket, started 1998
editor's note: Have just checked Rowan magazine this pattern came from. It is Rowan No 10. 1991? If so, this UFO may be 7 years older than previous estimates. Poss. try carbon dating

No wonder it's taken me so long, all that duplicate stitch. Why I didnt just knit the pattern I can't remember, it was too long ago. I love the fairisle chequered pattern, and I remember it being fun to knit. Maybe I'll have an extra push to finish this, it's a cute style. I'll come back tomorrow and show a pic of how it's meant to look.
I'm happy to say that, like the best fashion decisions, this little sweater still hasn't gone out of style, despite its years languishing at the very bottom of my list of priorities. Of course, there's still plenty of scope for that to happen - the shows not over til the sweater's on the lady.
Here's how much more I have still to do.
Duplicate stitch pattern in I think 2 colours around top of one sleeve. Max 2 hours.
Sew up
Pick up and knit front edges and collar
Block
So what's your oldest?

Hmmm...my oldest is a cardigan that is "technically" finished. I've even sewed the buttons on but it came out a bit larger than expected so it is in desperate need of a serious blocking where I can hopefully squeeze the size down a bit. It took about 2 years to complete as I was project jumping at the time and it's now been sitting on the top shelf of my closet for just over a year waiting to be blocked - ridiculous I know but I think I'm afraid that the blocking won't do the trick and then I'll have a dismal failure on my hands - it's quite sharp looking aside from being too large - lots of cables and textured stitches. Fingers crossed I guess... The fair isle on your UFO is lovely - you'll have to post a finished shot once it's sewn up. Looking forward to it...

What a gorgeous sweater - you have the patience of a saint to work all that duplicate stitch! Please, please, finish it - that sweater deserves to be worn and you are oh, so close.
Great question about our oldest UFOs! When I get home tonight I'm going to pick through my UFO black hole and see what I come up with. nona will report back.
