Claude

claude03.jpg

Claude, started 31 May 05 finished 29 July 05
Pattern: My own
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cotton Angora

Claude was inspired by Debbie Bliss’s toddler smocks; this is a very grown-up version. The pearl buttons to fasten and at the cuffs, and the deep wide neckline make her very ladylike. The mock smocking and cabling detail give a slight empire line. Wide, swinging jackets have been very much in evidence in ‘high’ fashion over the last couple of seasons, and Claude will be perfect for the early days of autumn.

This yarn makes a beautiful soft fabric, cool from the cotton, and it knit up very quickly on 5mm needles. I lost my way part way through the design of this and stalled for several weeks, but start to finish this will be a quick and easy knit.

I love how elegant Claude looks, all dressed up with pearls and tweed. But today the sky is the same colour as Claude, and I’m going to put her on, with jeans, sandals and a headscarf, to go shopping.

Posted by: Petula at July 31, 2005 03:19 PM

It's a really beautiful sweater. And so perfect for your frame. I love it! Are you sure you even need to take that knitwear design class you were planning on?

Posted by: Amy at July 31, 2005 03:20 PM

Anna, I love, love it! Another swingy knit, with my faves - cables and seed stitch! Love how you styled your hair to go with the outfit. You look classic! Hmm, first time I've come across a cardi with a rather masculine name, interesting.

Anna, I just purchased 20 balls of DB Cotton/Angora, with the plans of making Knitty's "Belle Epoque". I am nixing that in favor of the elegant Claude. Brava.

Posted by: Christina at August 1, 2005 04:34 AM

I love Claude - what a wonderful design - I too have some Cotton Angora sitting to one side with nothing in particular allocated to it - so Claude could just be what I'm looking for.

Well done you - you are so talented.

What a great idea! I often see clothes for tots and wish I could lay my hands on a grown-ups version. Once again, knitting has the answer!

Posted by: jenny vorwaller at August 1, 2005 07:05 PM

I was watching a programme on the history of fashion in the 1950s yesterday and Claude would fit in just fine. It was a time of great optimism but a return to style and flamboyance after the war. I also love the colour.
P.S how do you manage to take such great photos of yourself?

Posted by: Ali at August 1, 2005 07:20 PM

Another beautiful design, Anna! You are so talented and prolific, as well. I'm so glad that you decided to design and share. You've brought us some really lovely, unique pieces.

I see I am the 48th person to tell you how gorgeous Claude is. I wish I had your petite little frame, because on me that would just say "maternity smock" but on you it is an amazing piece of elegance, very cool 40's. I've seen at least 3 fashion mags so far this fall with spreads featuring "Hitchcock ladies" and you are once again right on the spot. Lovely!
