Life is elsewhere
Ennui. A wonderful word – is there an appropriate synonym? You may have noticed there has been a lot of it around (witness, Em has been feeling it, as has Julia, Rachel (who got over hers with a good gossip), and Adele who was FED UP with her knitting). Wendy puts it down to the end of summer and I have to agree. It’s the last bank holiday weekend of the year, until Christmas, signifying that summer is beating it’s retreat and in a few short days we’ll be back at school. Never mind that I left education fifteen years ago, it still provokes a sense of gloom. And this feeling has left me without much to say, or show. I have been remiss in my reading of and writing to my friends. There’s a feeling that, as fast as I run, I’m not moving.
Dear Jodi has been talking about friendships and I feel rather bruised. It is the start of a three day weekend and I am without a single plan. Life, as I said, is elsewhere.
So why don’t I show you some knitting and see if that cheers me up?

This is Hipknits silk in Seaweed and Jolly. These colours are far more ‘me’ than the lavender Peace I started with. This yarn is sumptuous. The slight variegation in the solid purple seems to make it flicker and glow.

And this is a little cardigan I’m working on for me. A navy blue merino/cashmere 4-ply blend, which I’m knitting from the cone: the project is not portable, but how lovely to think of there being (practically) no ends to sew in when I’m finished! It’s very similar to Baby Cashmerino and knits up into a sturdy, springy, stretchy fabric… I think I will wear this one a lot.

Finally the second in my Sockapaltwoza socks (looking disappointingly similar to previous progress shots). The end of August caught me unawares, so these hopped back into my hands to be finished. I still have a couple of weeks before they are torn from me. I’m very tempted to make a pair for myself but the lace has been making my hands hurt, rather.
That, dears, is all I have for now. I had intended to show you what's waiting in the wings, but really, who wants to see some balls of yarn. I think instead I’ll go and watch Bringing Up Baby instead. May tomorrow (always) be brighter.

That's *all* you have? My dear girl, everything is lovely, and inspirational. The navy yarn for the cardi looks rich and lovely and the silk...words fail. I think my next project is going to have to involve silk.
But when yarn fails, Kate, Cary and a cheetah must come to the rescue. Feel more screwbally soon!

Oooo! All your projects are gorgeous!

having no plans at all for a whole three days sounds fantastic to me. no obligations, just three days to do precisely what you feel like at any time.
love the projects; i'm particularly intrigued by the blue cardi!

think of it as a chance to do things at the spur of the moment (though I have noticed as well that ennui has been spreading through blogland).
all your projects look so pretty! I really like those socks (I'm a recent sock convert)

I've been feeling the blog ennui as well, partly because I'm preoccupied with life stuff and partly because I know it's knitting progress my pals want to see and I've been working on only one thing, which is for publication and can't be shown. And so, with all these new things happening, new places and new people, all I write about is how much I want to be back home. Sorry if I'm a bit of a downer lately ;)
I also envy you your three days off with no plans. That is my ideal weekend; I've always loved to spend my Saturday night at home alone, knitting or making art.
Also wanted to say that you're one of those people I meant, the people on the internet that I hardly know but really, really like. I'm glad I've "met" you.

What lovely knits you have in progress! I love them all, really...especially the cardigan. I agree...take the weekend as it comes and enjoy having no commitments and the choice to do whatever you please...take care :)

ennui... so THAT's what i've been suffering from for the last few weeks. there does seem to be a bit of an epidemic striking blogland at the moment.
the socks look beautiful! your sock pal is one lucky chick.

"Doctor" B. recommends a long walk in the countryside or, if you can't get out of the city, the least civilized park you can find. The combination of physical exercise and a reminder of the wonders of nature will refresh your spirits.

I'm working on a shawl from some cone yarn, and aside from not weaving in ends, I just like the idea of one, unbroken piece of yarn forming the finished garment. I guess that's a little Zen-y or something, but there is beauty in simplicity.
Can't wait to see more of your projects.

Love the lace pattern on the socks.
I don't have any plans for the long weekend and I don't think I will make any. :)
As for my knitting, I have a halter on the needles that I feel like throwing across the room. The neckband is giving me hell and if its not finished soon, Kate (the top) won't make her debut this year. :( Unfortunately, a lot of my summer tanks didn't make due to an arm/wrist injury.
Oh well, there's always fall and winter! ;)

That silk yarn looks beautiful--I love the colors you picked. I think the change of seasons can create a certain amount of ennui, of resistance to change--not wanting tohings to move on and so you stop everything (including knitting) in a vain attempt to slow things down. Not that I've ever had this problem at the end of summer--I'm always anxious to get Autumn underway, it's by far my favorite time of year, and I think it's energizing for knitting--summer knits usually bore me, but autumn and sweaters are just meant for each other!

the navy cardi is looking lovely... i sense another great design is emerging!

I don't have ennui. Therefore, I am sending you a huge HIGH ENERGY vibe - get ready - POW!
Feel better? P.S. That's a lot of knitting for someone with ennui. ;-)

your projects look gorgeous as usual. i love the stitch pattern on the cardi. hope you are feeling better.

I often think ennui might be my favorite word. It is right up there with serendipity.
But, I think everything you've been knitting looks great!

The blahs have spread to the southern hemisphere too - I am over winter and can't wait for summer. A warm day or too and everyone is out and about and enjoying the sun.

I am ennuied up to the eyeballs. Life is working and sleeping at the moment, and I miss my knitting. But I like September, so here's hoping I'll shed the "blahs", as Lynne described them, soon!

I've been getting the end of summer blues too. Here's a big virtual hug - and I love the look of the blue cardigan. That's a very pretty pattern repeat. There was a similar one in, I think, DB baby cash in Vogue a few years ago. Is it inspired from there or is it one you are making up as you go along?
