Jess
Jess, started 17 Oct 05 finished 28 Oct 05
Pattern: My own, available here.
Yarn: Elle yarns merino washable DK, doubled

This was such a fun knit. The basketweave stitch pattern really looks ‘woven’, the red is eye-poppingly red, and with doubled yarn and big needles, all the knitting was finished in a week. I couldn’t find big buttons that were just the right colour, so I bought plastic ones instead and made them little crocheted jackets. Mr Raitte rose even higher, if that were possible, in my estimation when he commented, ‘that little jacket looks really sophisticated’. That’s my guy. It’s a simple design (there is almost no shaping), but somehow it looks sharp, and it works.
Someone else got a jacket too:
Leon, started 31 Oct 05 finished 12 Nov 05
Pattern: Based on this Chihuahua sweater
Yarn: RYC Cashsoft DK, left over from Jemima

Harvey has a long history of clothes-wearing. As a kitten we used to dress him up in doll’s clothes - he looked so sweet in a white cotton lace-trimmed skirt and blue wool cardigan. He has always been peculiarly docile: most other cats I know would scratch your eyes out before they would let you put clothes on them, but Harvey has always considered himself more human than feline.
He’s pushing 20 now and feels the cold, the little love, so he joins a very select group: the superior people who wear Fashionable Life knits. I think he looks splended; the grey brings out the colour of his whiskers. He’s also not that steady on his feet any more, so I was a bit anxious that the sleeves might upset his balance; luckily he doesn’t move around as much as he used to, either. Mother is on strict surveillance duty, and I will remove the sleeves if they impede him in any way. Dear Harvey. I hope he likes it, and that it keep his poor old bones warm.

new hairstyle is super chic.

Harvey's little jumper looks so cute. If you were to do the same to my wee moggie
(George) then there would definitely be blood spilled.

Lovely!! Your designs are truly classic and beautiful. I love coming back and finding the new tresures that you knit!
Posted by: margaux at November 15, 2005 01:58 PM
This design is absolutely gorgeous! Are you planning to sell this one and/or Jemima?
Posted by: Cheryl at November 15, 2005 02:09 PM
Jess is adorable... but Leon... well, Leon makes my heart skip a beat! I hope Harvey enjoys his outfit :).
Posted by: grumperina at November 15, 2005 02:41 PM
The new coiff looks great! And Jess is lovely---especially the red! Another great design--keep up the wonderful work .
Posted by: amanda at November 15, 2005 03:02 PM
Harvey is a lamb!!!! He looks like he's an elder uncle to my 3 black kitties. :D Though they didn't inheirit his fashion sense.
Great jacket, too! The hubby is right- very sophisticated!
Posted by: Lelah at November 15, 2005 03:19 PM
Have you heard that "posting the cat" is the blogging equivalent of "jumping the shark"? Well, you managed to do it and still maintain high quality knitting content, thereby posting the cat without "posting the cat".
Hair is great. If this is a big change for you, it may coincide with a change in your life. Are you acknowledging your growing status as a knit designer?
Posted by: B. at November 15, 2005 03:43 PM
I am constantly amazed at the beauty of your work! You have a great eye for color and form. It just makes my day to see your lovely creations. Have a great day, Molly.
Posted by: Molly Callahn at November 15, 2005 03:56 PM
Very sharp and sophisticated!! And YOUR jacket isn't bad either... ;-)
Just kidding - love the red, love the basketweave - it really does look tailored - it's hard to believe there isn't much shaping going on with that one. Another lovely design.
And Harvey...well, that is just about the most adorable thing I've seen. I love that you knit him a sweater (our of Cashsoft no less) to keep warm with.
Posted by: Vicki at November 15, 2005 04:22 PM
Beautiful design. You're right, it looks very sharp.
You cat is hilarious!
Posted by: adele at November 15, 2005 05:03 PM
love the hair, love the cardi, love the red yarn, love the picture! love the cute cat with a little cardi of his own; he'll be so warm and comfy this winter.
Posted by: kris at November 15, 2005 05:04 PM
That little cat jacket is gorgeous! If only I had a cat.
Posted by: Madeline at November 15, 2005 05:08 PM
both of you look spectacular! i love reading about someone who cares for their pets like you do.
ps - harvey is quite photogenic! what a doll!
Posted by: jody at November 15, 2005 05:09 PM
Another great design Anna. It looks very tailored for a knitted garment. I am extremely impressed that your cat will wear clothes. Any attempts by us to dress up any of our family cats would result in severe injury!
Posted by: Mary at November 15, 2005 05:13 PM
Oh, HARVEY! I know you told me once that you used to dress him up, but I assumed he put up with it out of forbearance, not because he wanted to be clothed. Foolish me-of course he does! Leon is the most handsome cat sweater in the (perhaps short?) history of cat sweaters.
And Jess is lovely too.
Posted by: Ashley at November 15, 2005 05:16 PM
Oh my word, I am in love with the pussycat top.... I wish I could dress my cat, but she would not let me.
I love Jess (apart from sharing the name), it is very attractive.
Posted by: jess at November 15, 2005 05:23 PM
Both are lovely! Mr. Raitte was right ... that jacket is sophisticated! The cat sweater is soooo sweet and cute! Splendid work again, Anna!
Posted by: Agnes at November 15, 2005 05:26 PM
Rowan eat your heart out! Very nice!
Posted by: Cara at November 15, 2005 05:27 PM
Jess is a knockout! That photo looks like it was taken right out of a Rowan mag.
Love the new 'do, too :)
Posted by: parikha at November 15, 2005 05:48 PM
omg, it took me a second to realize that was you (I didn't expect to see the new hair yet). new fab jacket, new gorgeous hair, and I hope a new beautiful day(s)! what are elle yarns btw?
your cat is too cute, his little jacket is so sophisticated as well.
Posted by: yahaira at November 15, 2005 05:52 PM
You BOTH look very sophisticated! Any chance we can see close-ups of the haircut and the basketweave? I like your hair a lot, and I'd love to see the sweater in more detail...
Posted by: liesl at November 15, 2005 06:01 PM
He looks very poised in his new jacket!
Dawn
Posted by: dawn at November 15, 2005 06:27 PM
Another wonderful design! I love the color. And I only wish that I could get my old kitty cat wearing a sweater! She's too fussy and it would go completely unappreciated. Harvey's adorable in his though!
Posted by: Annie at November 15, 2005 06:27 PM
Fantastic haircut,
Fantastic jacket,
Fantastic cat! (but of course, all cats are fantastic)
I think the glam haircut probably helps the jacket to look even more sophis., and a great ensemble. I am very glad Harvey has someone so kind to look after him in his old age. He looks quietly pleased with his little cardie to me.
Posted by: Kitty at November 15, 2005 06:36 PM
I love your work (and your name!) Anna! Harvey looks so distinguished in his sweater. He's a spitting image of my Rasmus, who I love dearly (so thinking of an old Harvey, and a Rasmus who is getting old to, almost makes me cry so I better stop).
Posted by: Anna at November 15, 2005 06:41 PM
Awww, how cute on the kitty cat! Your sweater is lovely...nice job!
Posted by: Roxanne at November 15, 2005 06:45 PM
Another triumph, Anna! What a beautiful jacket. I can barely contain myself when I think of trying to wrestle Tuna or Townie into a cat coat. Harvey is a sport. As for the Birthday/personality thing below, the glass should be half-full, my darling. In addition to your talent, your incredible spirit always shows through on this blog. Don't underestimate yourself.
Posted by: Julia at November 15, 2005 06:45 PM
Wow, Jess looks amazing! I hope you offer it up as a pattern somehow. It's great and I agree with Mr. Raitte, it DOES look really sophisticated.
Posted by: Angela at November 15, 2005 06:47 PM
Cute! I love your photo too.. it makes Jess look quite sophisticated. Your cat looks so sweet in the sweater. Hope it keeps him warm!
Posted by: Diana at November 15, 2005 07:26 PM
I need that jacket pattern! PLEASE!!!!???
Posted by: LeAnne at November 15, 2005 07:42 PM
The red should turn a lot of heads! I love the little kitty sweater; it is unusual to find such a willing cat model.
Posted by: Birdsong at November 15, 2005 08:01 PM
oh anna, jess is divine! she is absolutely flattering to a T! i also adore how the collar sits so perfectly. your new haircut is divine- so very oo'la la.
harvey is gorgeous. he just looks like the perfect cat to own. and leon is the absolute height of high dapper fashion on him.
Posted by: jacqueline at November 15, 2005 08:05 PM
wow that cat looks wonderful for 20!! WOW
Posted by: pixie at November 15, 2005 08:06 PM
I normally mock cats in clothes and people who put cats in clothes, (with the exception of young girls who should be required to dress up their cats and have tea with them) but oh, Harvey is just too heartbreakingly sweet to mock. You are a sweet girl to knit him a sweater and keep his old bones warm.
Posted by: Purly Whites at November 15, 2005 08:19 PM
I agree--both designs are fab. Harvey looks particularly cute, though I agree that USUALLY dressing up cats and dogs if you're over the age of 10 is no-no. It certainly seems like it's working for him!
Posted by: --Deb at November 15, 2005 08:30 PM
I agree most wholeheartedly with Mr. Raitte. Very sophisticated! (Actually, both the jacket and the new hairstyle!)
If you were to offer that pattern for sale, I would be first in line to buy one.
Posted by: Laura at November 15, 2005 08:57 PM
harvey's a sweetheart
Posted by: maryse at November 15, 2005 09:42 PM
Cuteness!! I love Harvey's little jacket - what a great idea.
And your jacket - wow!! How on Earth do you keep coming up with such great designs. Love the haircut - very sophisticated!
Posted by: Jackie at November 15, 2005 09:55 PM
It's a lovely jacket, the red looks classic on you. The photo is beautiful.
Posted by: erin at November 15, 2005 09:59 PM
Aww, doesn't he look gorgoeous! You do too!
Posted by: Nichola at November 15, 2005 10:15 PM
Oh, beautiful sweaters all around! I had a hot water bottle for my old kitty; she'd spend the day on it. Harvey is truly fashonable!
Posted by: Dava at November 15, 2005 11:01 PM
Both you and Harvey look stunning and sofisticated! Youre so talented Anna, thanks for sharing all your lovely knits, feline especially! Your so lucky to have Harvey for 20 years and he's lucky to have you as his doting and talented mom!
Posted by: Debi at November 15, 2005 11:27 PM
the jacket and your new hair are gorgeous. i envy your meticulous designs and beautiful pieces. bravo!

Beautiful jacket, you're so amazingly talented! And I like what you've made for Harvey too :-)
Posted by: lyn at November 16, 2005 12:10 AM
Beautiful. I can't wait to drop everything and make Jess, she's the new jacket of my fantasy life.
As far as jumping the shark is concerned, I'm afraid blogging itself jumped the shark a while ago, so we're safe to post anything now. Knowing that I wasn't involved in anything cutting-edge is the only reason I could lower myself to blogging about my haircut! And the kitty sweater is so very funny, and sweet too.
Posted by: jodi at November 16, 2005 12:11 AM
Oh my goodness... I'm all set to tell you how beautiful your jacket is (I totally agree with "sophisticated"!) and now I have to do it with weak knees. Harvey is the cat's pajamas... or cat's sweater... or cat's jacket... or something -- so sweet!
Posted by: Vicki at November 16, 2005 12:26 AM
You look absolutely dreamy in your new Jess. Great work!
Posted by: Miss Twiss at November 16, 2005 02:28 AM
Love the jacket. LOVE it. I will buy that pattern the moment you offer, if you choose to, which did I mention I'd love???!!!
Harvey looks like a sweetie. ;-)

Beautiful, beautiful work!
Harvey's coat is pretty sweet- have you seen http://www.stuffonmycat.com/? They could do with some more classy images.

Wow, look at all those comments! Your blog has hit the big time!:o)
Love the new sweaters, my cats would kill me if I tried to put a jumper on them! Hair looks fab as well!
Posted by: Anna at November 16, 2005 09:56 AM
Love Jess - I would definately buy the pattern if you offer it for sale. The photo is great as well - garden looks lovely and you look like a professional model.
Haven't Rowan snapped you up as a designer yet? Don't they know what they are missing?

You look so beautiful in your new fabulous jacket! I love that photo too, stylish!
Posted by: terhi at November 16, 2005 01:28 PM
I love the hair, the jacket, Harvey, and Harvey's sweater. I hope you'll be making the pattern for Jess available!
Posted by: Petula at November 16, 2005 04:29 PM
I adore Harvey's cardigan - I've emailed the photo to my Mum, who used to dress her kittens when she was very small. Somehow, I don't think our cat would wear a cardigan. Perhaps when she reaches Harvey's age though (she's only 12 years old).
~x~

Love the hair and love Jess and Harvey's sweater, bless his heart. I keep meaning to email you and arrange to get Trudie and the mannequin back to you. How about we meet up one weekend somewhere and maybe get a coffee and knitting session in at the same time? I will email you soon!

one of my cats likes to wear clothes. i use her as a model for scarves and things for photos, often. i almost cried when i read what you said about him getting old...noooo! why do they have to?
Posted by: natasha fialkov at November 17, 2005 03:38 AM
I know you probably get asked this a lot, but do you have any plans to publish your designs or submit more of them to the free online pattern sites? There are several of your designs that I would love to make and would happily buy if they were in a book or mag. Best wishes. PPx

Harvey! Please give him a little scratch behind the ears... what a sweet kitty. I hope he stays snug as the days get cooler.
And *fantastic* sweater design, there! I love it!

Anna, I cannot believe you knit such an adorable sweater for Harvey, and that he wears it — such a kind thing to do for him! I can't tell you how much that picture touches me.
Your designs, as always, are a delight.
Posted by: Tanya at November 17, 2005 05:04 PM
Your new jacket is divine--the fit is perfect on you--I guess that is the beauty of a self-designed garment.
I can't believe you got the kitty in a jumper--mine would HATE that. Glad it can keep him warm though. The picture is too cute ;)

Beautiful jacket! I love the colour and shape - and the new haircut suits you - very chic! Harvery looks like a cutie in his jumper - snug as a bug in a rug!
Just been reading back over your blog and you've inspired me to pick up my project again - I was truly FED UP and now I feel ready to start again :)

Harvey is a great model :-) He looks so cute in that jacket, and your red jacket is very sophisticated! I'll join the throng of people who want to knit one too! (but then yours won't be unique. Hmmm.)

I swear I left a comment last week when I first saw this post, but I think I got so caught up in sending a link to everyone I know that loves kitties, that I forgot! Harvey is perfect, and so is his little sweater! Wow! If only my cat would let me play dress up with him, but sadly he won't.

Oh my God what a dashing cat! I'm going to have to make one for my two little boys!

....and I've a "harvey" as well so I get the kitty love thing in spades!
