Bridie
Sweaters
So many charming sweaters are made today that it would be quite possible for a woman to be elegantly attired from morning till midnight in a wardrobe entirely composed of different sweaters and skirts. Few women can resist the temptation of a soft new pullover in a luscious shade, and how right they are (unless they are afflicted with a very large bust), because it provides them with an inexpensive way of renewing their wardrobe. Besides, a beautiful sweater is always more elegant than a nondescript dress.
But you should not abuse this useful garment. In particular, you should realise that a sweater can also be the contrary of elegance if you have neglected to respect one of the following rules:
- Only solid-coloured sweaters of cashmere or silk (or of similar synthetic materials) are elegant in the city.
- The open neckline of a V-neck sweater should always be filled in with a scarf unless it is worn over a blouse or pullover.
- Only one kind of embroidery or appliqué is chic in the daytime: naïve or Tyrolean-type trimmings on winter sports sweaters.
- Heavy knits, stripes, cable stitching, Jacquard patterns, and all kinds of eccentric designs should preferably be worn only with trousers.
Guide to Elegance: For Every Woman Who Wants to Be Well and Properly Dressed on All Occasions - Genevieve Antoine Dariaux
------------
The point is made well enough, despite the assertion about women with big busts (an affliction I have often wished for a bit of). We all know that to be untrue, it’s simply a question of getting the neckline right. Despite the rustic styling here, I think this qualifies as sufficiently elegant ‘for the city’.

As someone with a big(ger) chest - you're better off without it. For instance, the gorgeous sweater you've created wouldn't look half as elegant on me as it looks on you!
I love the angles in the second photograph - the sweater is perfect with just the top buttoned.
Beautiful job Anna! Just beautiful!

Anna, there seems to be no limit to your talent! Bridie is just perfect.
Posted by: parikha at February 5, 2006 09:45 PM
Lovely and so perfect on you. I'm in love with the diamond pattern (although I'm with Cara about how Miss Bridie would look on busty me. Sigh.).
Posted by: Ashley at February 5, 2006 09:55 PM
Hi Anna,
The sweater/cardigan is beautiful and looks equally good buttoned just at the top/all the way down. How clever!
Being challenged in the bust dept, its definitely something I would wear (if I was talented enough to knit such a lovely garment).
And I love the quotes you are using - I must foward this on to my "city" friend

Stunning, really. Just lovely. And you take such marvelous pictures. Both in the sense that you are photogenic, and that either you or someone you know is good at photography!

Such lovely photos of Bridie and you. I like Bridie unbuttoned. I think a publisher should get in touch with you and publish your patterns in a book with your lovely photos and your lovely writing to accompany it.

This is quite a feat; you have managed to design a sweater that is exciting and demure all at once. It's beautiful.
Posted by: Cara at February 6, 2006 03:34 AM
So lovely! It looks so great open and closed. Beautiful!
Posted by: Katie at February 6, 2006 04:42 AM
Gorgeous, absolutely perfect. What an inspiring design....congratulations.
Also, good to know to know that I can add my very large bust to my list of afflictions. I guess that I would say that at least I don't have to fill my v-necks with scarves. Ahem.

Beautifully elegant Anna. Your Blog is a joy to read. Please make the pattern available. Best Wishes

Oh! For the briefest of moments I thought that those were your own words, and I thought to myself, "Oh dear. What is this? She's going to get herself into some trouble here..."
Remember, only for the BRIEFEST of moments.
Another fabulous design. This one is truly unique and worthy of country or city!

It´s absolutely beautiful! I especially love the cardi on the second photo, closed only at the top. It´s so elegant and the closing is so extraordinary. I hope, this design will be available. I love your designs so much!
(And I also love the first pictures of the Below Stairs Jacket - this looks like a jacket I MUST have!)

Awesome design, I agree with your choice to return the bottom half to the center line so you can wear it open. It is especially elegant with rubber boots.
Posted by: Laura at February 6, 2006 01:30 PM
Beautiful. I love the second photo, sweater worn open, the best.
Posted by: Elizabeth at February 6, 2006 03:10 PM

Posted by: Philippa at February 6, 2006 04:10 PM
Oh, how I wish I could pull that off without looking, er, matronly!
What a clever design--I bet it'll be your new favorite sweater. Looks like it goes with just about everything, thanks to the nice neutral shade.

i love birdie, too. I see others love it as well. sell it, girl. the pattern...we need it in our lives;)

Birdie is wonderful. Such a thoughtful design, which seems rare these days and, as always, beautifully executed!
Posted by: Noo at February 6, 2006 05:04 PM
i've been lurking for a while now & i just have to tell you how gorgeous your patterns are - simply stunning!!
i'm curious as to how birdie would look with just the bottom half buttoned - i have a bigger chest & might enjoy buttoning the bottom & letting the top of my blouse show. maybe if you do another photo shoot you could include a photo like that?
either way, i'm eager to see a pattern for purchase - i foresee a summer full of "fashionable life sweaters"
Posted by: maria at February 6, 2006 05:09 PM
Oh! Birdie is lovely. Please let me know if she is going to be available soon!

I wasn't sure how to contact you with a question. First, your knitting is fantastic, so beautiful and I love the patterns. Your talent is impressive for sure. I have a question.....do you share (or sell) your patterns? I am in love with a lot of them but particularly "Claude" ....so far....there will be more "loves" to come I am sure.
