Lavender’s blue (diddle diddle)
Summer 2007 – surely this must be a design for summer 2007. A few months ago I had been feeling quietly smug, the penny having finally dropped that I needed to work on designs several months in advance of their season. Alas, apparently not far enough in advance… summer here is decidedly on its way out, with barely a chance to wear Daisy. I planned to find a wildflower meadow to gambol in, but that will have to wait for another year. This particular knit is also historic as it is the first one which I have designed on paper, but made up by third-party hands (thank you!).
Daisy cardigan
Pattern: My own
Yarn: Rowan Wool Cotton in Antique
The garter slip stitch in wool cotton drapes in a pleasingly supple way, and I've used my favourite Annie Modesitt slipped-stitch edging. The neckline is finished with a bias binding cut from some wisteria print cotton purchased years ago down the road in Shepherd’s Bush market. It closes with a concealed fastening of pearl buttons and sewn button loops, both applied to grossgrain tape.
I once heard of a diamond ring lined on the inside with jewels, and I enjoyed thinking about secret treasures while finishing the precious details.

Anna, I love those little details, and Rowan Wool Cotton is one of my favorite go-to yarns... what a great sweater! Beautiful design. The bias binding is meticulously stitched on... wow. Looks great!

You're right ... I once had a ring with a diamond on the inside of the ring. Since it was on the inside, it couldn't be very big ... but the whole idea of subtle elegance is what attracted me (and I was never a fan of diamond anyway!).

oh so pretty! beautiful stitch pattern and details; great silhouette. hopefully you'll get some wear out of daisy this year before autumn seriously kicks in.

Oh, the details, hurrah for the details. Lovely loop and button finish, and beautiful cardigan. Even though you didn't get your photo gamboling through a wildflower meadow, the garden scene is idyllic, in a Jane Austen kind of way.

breathtaking!

Beautiful and elegant, as always. Your knitting, your designs, and your photos always bring me such a quiet calm: a brief, but peaceful, respite from busy days and stressful deadlines. Thank you for this--

Yes. Everything they said. Anna, you amaze me.

I love the delicacy of the neckline finishing and the secreted button detail. Ah, and loops! I love the loops. As always, exquisite work.

I am entranced by this new design. I wonder if, done in a deeper shade, it could be an all-seasons sweater for those of us in mild-ish climates.
Your photo has inspired me to go trim some lavender at once.

It is a beautiful pattern. I love the care you take with every aspect of your designs. The tiny pearl buttons are perfect - it must be so satisfying when everything comes together so well and your hard work is rewarded.
Posted by: Kendra at August 20, 2006 08:44 PM
Oh, it's so beautiful! I love the pearly buttons, so perfect with the antique white color.

Its beautiful, the detailings are exquisite - and I love the hair too!

Years ago a friend of mine told me her grandfather came up with a ring with diamonds rattling, unseen, inside (he is a jeweler in New York). I was appalled. Why close away the pretty things so no one could ever see them? And how could you be sure they were diamonds and not ratty grey pebbles? (Now that I think about it, it's an intriguing concept. But still.)
Your buttons are different. They are seen, by the wearer, when she put on or takes off this beautiful garment. The rest of the time they are a secret treasure. This is so wonderful.

It's really an honor for us that you blog and share your projects with us. You're such great inspiration and so fashionable, too! ;)

So well described, antique white and hidden buttons. I like how you sewed the buttons on to tape. Quiet elegance.

Look at the hair! Look at the hair! I really love it. Daisy is great too. Just the sort of thing I'd like in my wardrobe.

Your designs are gorgeous, as always. It's not too late to wear Daisy. It's only august and maybe you'll have a warm september.

Hi!
I saw one of your sock photos while doing research on a Regia sock line that I will be listing on my website on sale at 60% off (Line Steps). Here is the link http://knittingiris.typepad.com/photos/gallery_2005/elfines2.html. May I post it on my website? Please do let me know. Also, is this a commercial pattern or yours? I would really appreciate it if you could let me know.
Cheers,
Sue Fulay Little

Pretty, pretty cardigan :) AND I LOVE THE HAIRCUT! ;o) Well done for kicking that black dog out again - I think several of us are doing that constantly. Knitting helps ;o)

Beautiful cardigan Anne....and I love your new haircut! And......I'm just a tad jealous that you live "down the road" from Shepherd's Bush Market! Ahhhh England in the '70's...that was the best time for moi.
Posted by: Leslie at August 21, 2006 02:35 PM
All I can say, is what pure elegance, Daisy is such a beautiful cardigan, and what a fabulous haircut what more can one say, apart from that you are so inspiring! Thank you

It's wonderful -- all the details, the design and workmanship, the loveliness, the modeling and photography. You're going to make us wait?? Well worth it, but I wonder what else you have up your sleeve...

Oooo la la! The details really make this sweater. Another gorgeous piece.
Posted by: Kelly B at August 21, 2006 04:28 PM
What a cute sweater! I like the idea of hidden jewels, too, although if I had the money for a diamond ring with jewels on the inside... well, I'd have more time for knitting, to be sure!
I love the hair, too - I think this is the first time you've shown it off since mentioning that you wanted a change!
Posted by: Carrie at August 21, 2006 04:43 PM

Your patterns, and the pictures you post of your work, are all so feminine and purty. It makes me want to sit in the garden, except I have no garden. I live in the city. Drat.
Posted by: Mandy at August 24, 2006 01:13 AM
Such incredibly beautiful details! I always like to find those secret touches, such as a print lining or facing.
Posted by: Birdsong at August 24, 2006 06:36 AM
I love the idea of secret buttons. It's like wearing really good silk underwear - only you know but it makes you feel special and smile all day.

love the little details... it's the small things that make one happy, right?
instead of calling it "summer 2007", you could always just take off to someplace warm and call it "vacation 2006" :)

This is my first time here and you have a lovely blog!
That piece is so beautiful and such a refreshing color, too!

Anna it's exquisite! Perfectly simple, beautifully elegant, and the hidden gems just lift it into that class your knits always achieve.
I look forward enormously to the pattern being available to purchase next year...? :)
PS Your hair looks very nice. Is it new?

Kind of a MY SPACE for new designers, artists, crafters to meet and show their work. Just wanted to pass this information along so you could check it out and maybe pass it along to your readers. Thanks and your work is beautiful. Thanks again,
