Evidence of absurdity
Weeks ago, Alicia tagged me for a meme that was doing the rounds. You remember the one, 'six strange things' I think it was called.
Well I wracked my brain for days on end, struggling really to come up with anything strange and arriving eventually at the only logical conclusion that I am quite the most normal girl who ever was.
So the tagging lay fallow, the meme went no further. But I did catch something from Alicia and it was far more pernicious.
Because I don’t have anything more important to do than make a queen-sized crochet blanket… like come up with twenty five original designs, for example. On a deadline.
Let's mark this up as items 1-12 in the list of most absurd things about me. I have not yet stopped (the fever will pass, it always does), but I have forced myself to slow down, limit the squares to one per day. Then, when the twenty-five original designs are delivered, I should be ready to join them all together and make the edgings.
Anna, you are absurd.

Crochet granny squares do appear to be all the rage, don't they? And I thought I had done with those years ago! Well, if I can do bell bottoms and hip huggers again, why not granny squares? Thanks for the inspiration Anna (I think)!

When I have deadlines, I can find a million other things to do too. At least your diversions are lovely!
Posted by: lorinda at March 12, 2007 12:03 AM
Wow, even you are making them! The granny square bugs sure spread around fast! Hopefully I won't catch them anytime soon ;)

its funny, i just sat down tonight and started using up my bits and pieces on some granny squares. i've already made two really large ones that have been crazily loved over the past few years. there's definitely a soft spot in my heart for those raggety mismatched blankets :). are you going with the traditional black to join them? i'm liking how you've lined them all in white so far.

I love the colors...they are so cheerful, but still modern.

i really really really hope that "25 original designs" is code for "i'm going to publish a book"!
Posted by: kate at March 12, 2007 03:09 AM
Aha, but you are also very funny!

There's nothing odd about granny squares. I keep thinking that a granny square throw would be just the thing for my sofa. Luckily my sanity is saved by the fact that my crochet skills are inexistant. Your colours are really rather lovely. x

The photo is just so deja vu! I've making granny squares too. Can't stop.

It's not a granny square but it is "squares" - there is a crochet-along for this sweater over at Crochetville. I have been making one and the texture is beautiful. It might give you ideas. Here is the link:

stress sometimes stifles the imagination, so there's nothing absurd about finding another outlet for the pressure--you can call the blanket a means of finding the right mental space to come up with all those designs :)
i agree with kate; please say it's a book!

Absurd is good - what's life without a healthy helping of it? Like weird, everyone should have SOME. :-)
Although, very selfishly, I am looming forward to a book if that's what it turns out to be...
Posted by: Catie at March 12, 2007 04:09 PM
I was going correct my mistyping of looming forward, but I quite like the idea of looming forward to a book!

Lovely.
I find myself itching to pick up a crochet needle and do granny squares, but unfortuately, I still have patterns to finish, and my husband might threaten me with divorce if I don't!
*sighs*
Looking forward to your book of patterns. You will tell us where to buy it, won't you?

It's hard not to catch that bug. I have been watching Alicia's, and Siow Chin's, and even though I have no yarns to use (except an overwhelming abundance of weird sage green acrylic) I have the urge to granny-square. I want to do a matched one with blues and blacks. I must not buy more yarn. I want/I must not... Constantly fighting. (I actually typed "I must now buy more yarn" at first! Ha!)

LOVE THE SQUARES!!!! Is there a pattern? Wool or cotton? Thanks!!

Pretty colours! Hmm, good way to use up all those end-of-project bits. Now I think I'm infected too!

Even though I don't really like crochet and have a million other things to do, I am suddenly struck with the idea of crocheting squares for a blanket.
I think you're infectious.

I love to crochet squares and have recently finished the 'boho blocks cardi' from interweave carichet. It is a few posts back on my blog...doing the squares is a soothing thing to do, a bit liek knitting a plain sock, mindless stuff you can watch a film to or read a blog by...love your blog too BTW..Marianne

They're beautiful. I can relate to limiting the making of squares in the interest of meeting deadlines. When you're ready, you should join the Granny-Along. :)

What a great job! Think of all the color inspiration you were getting from the crocheting; not really procrastinating, just warming up the creative juices.

I know a strange thing - that you create all these amazing things and hardly wear nary a one. Now that is a mystery dear Anna. Since I am a lagger - to answer your question, yes I will send you the flummery sock pattern - cuff down and on two circs as it is (is it completely the opposite of your usual?) but I am behind with deadlines myself, not as exciting as your own though. So soon, soon.

I often find that the diversion that is sparked by a deadline often gives me an additional boost of creativity to complete the first project. So don't fight it.....go with the flow.

If it's time-consuming, tiny, diabolical squares you can't get enough of, look here:

I agree with Bernie...go with the flow.

Very cute blanket!

Granny squares never looked so good. I like your plan - giving in to the obsession on your own terms. Me, I'd give myself some crazy rule - like must do 5 squares before my real work. Then, suddenly, the obsession goes away. By the 3rd square I'm looking around for the dust cloth...the report I'm supposed to be writing...anything but the 4th square... Still, they are very charming...

Crocheting a queen sized granny square blanket seems to be the most sensible thing to do when faced with a deadline.
Posted by: mary jane at March 14, 2007 01:33 AM
Please say you're writing a book!!
Posted by: Christina at March 14, 2007 04:34 AM
Your granny squares are gorgeous, not like the ones I used to make as a child out of gruesome acrylic colours!!
Posted by: Lin at March 14, 2007 06:52 PM
I love them, and I'm jealous. Even though I've been shown a million times, I just can't turn the corner on those squares.....hmmm, seems my life may be a granny square.....
Posted by: Liz at March 14, 2007 07:11 PM
A deadline? Are you not making this for yourself or you just decided you need accountability? You know I've been wanting to learn a little more crochet myself. Your blanket will be lovely and you can always say it's an antique!!!! Ha!

So inspiring. Thank you. I've just learned how to make granny squares (this week, in fact) and I find them hopelessly addictive. Perhaps I'll have to embark on my own blanket-making adventure.
Posted by: Erin at March 16, 2007 07:26 PM
Love the granny squares...they are addictive, aren't they?:) Good luck with the 25 original designs thing. I always keep a journal on me and do the brain drain writing every day when I have some creative production to do. It is amazing where ideas can come from. Good luck!
